Summary
A Bill presented by Neil Carmichael MP to provide greater protection for frozen wilderness in the Antarctic.
The Bill aims to improve the environmental protection and governance of the Antarctic by introducing a 'Liability Annex' which would require companies undertaking activities in Antarctica to establish contingency plans in the event of environmental emergencies, with financial liability being imposed on defaulting operators. The Bill would also amend the Antarctic Act 1994, allowing the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to permit foreign nationals on British-led expeditions.
In 2009, the previous Labour government introduced a draft Antarctic Bill but it went no further due to the General Election.
